Last year, writer and director Ari Aster burst onto the scene and other substitute chapter in the horror renaissance with his feature directorial debut Hereditary. Apparently not one to get off upon his laurels, Ari Aster is already back with his follow-up, the highbrow horror film Midsommar. The first want ad for Midsommar has arrived and as you might expect, it is both unsettling and awesome. Check it out:
When its the end well, Im a huge aficionado of trailers that focus more upon teasing the films space next to laying out the specific scheme beats, and thats what we acquire from the Midsommar trailer. The logline for the film is that a teen girl joins her boyfriend upon a summer trip where things go awry, and this want ad doesnt really say us much more than that, fittingly maintaining the mystery. Its more more or less conveying a feeling, and the feeling that we acquire here is severely unsettling.
The imagery paints a describe of a joyous festival. The desaturated color palette, blown out highlights and the almost-Wes Andersonian symmetry in some of the shots are expected to evoke an idyllic describe of summer. The sum up issue has this unclear nostalgic air to it, giving off a magical flower facility vision of what we think of as summer. The letterbox is even white! fittingly how can something fittingly beautiful be fittingly unsettling?
The cadence and the minimalistic score of this want ad construct slowly, with clockwork ticking the length of to some inevitable terror, the evil lurking beneath the heavenly and luminous veneer. all the even though there is a weirdness to the people we are seeing and what they are saying, and the non-belief upon Florence Pughs characters tilt echoes our own. We bewilderment what is off more or less this area next towards the stop of the want ad we locate out.
Midsommar might purpose midsummer, but this want ad might as skillfully be called The Horror of Hippies. Its not categorically clear what is going on, but there seems to be some cult-ish, paganism-type stuff at play. supreme the ending of Hereditary, Ari Aster seems to have a incorporation with such ideas. There is a shot of someone with bloody hands against a rune-covered rock, a atrociously disfigured person, some peculiar ritual and a bear inborn dissected. Something sinister is categorically in the works and Florence Pughs Dani will someway have to run off it.
Another issue that unsettles throughout this want ad is the noise the characters keep making. Hereditarys publicity showed how gross children are with Charlies clucking noise, a noise that moviegoers who thought themselves indigenous and funny approved to create in the theater. Here the members of this group/participants in this festival are making this exhale strong with their mouths that kind of reminds me of a noise the children made in the leisure interest sequence in The OA.
Which makes you think, whats with Ari Aster and noisemaking and how much bother did he have staying silent in school?
Midsommar has a great teen cast which is led by Were the Millers and Detroits Will Poulter and Florence Pugh, who just starred in the highly thought of wrestling flick feat with my Family. all in all, this is an awesome trailer, and as someone who admired the craft of Hereditary more than I actually liked the movie itself, Midsommar just vaulted into one of my most anticipated movies this year.
The festivities begin with Midsommar opens in theaters upon August 9. Check out our 2019 liberty schedule to keep track of all the years biggest movies, and for the latest in why Midsommar is nevertheless less horrifying than Fyre Festival, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.
